İstənilən müsbət x və y ədədləri üçün y=ax+b bərabərliyini ödəyən və tam ədədlər olan yalnız bir x və y cütlüyü mövcuddur. Bu halda a quotient, b isə remainder adlanır.
b sıfırdan böyük və ya 0-a bərabər və x-dan kiçikdir. Məsələn: 32=3x10+2

Qalığın 0 olmasını xüsusi hal kimi qeyd etməliyik.Bu halda y is divisible by x (y x-ə tam bölünür) deyilir. Məsələn 28 is divisible by 7. Çünki 28=7x4+0. Elə hal da ola bilər ki kiçik rəqəm olan y-i böyük rəqəm olan x-ə bölürük. Bu halda nəticə quotient=0, remainder=x olacaq. Məsələn 7=9x0+7. Bəzən qalıq daha əhəmiyyətli olur.
